Our principal and staff
Our school team is committed to every student’s learning, wellbeing and sense of belonging. We work together to create a supportive and inclusive school where every child is set up for success.
Welcome from our principal
My name is Allison Pattison, and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Biraban Public School community.
At Biraban Public School, inclusivity and the philosophy that “Everyone Matters” are central to everything we do. This belief shapes our approach to supporting and nurturing each student, creating an environment where individual growth and achievement are encouraged and celebrated.
We’re fortunate to have a team of passionate and skilled educators who work together to create engaging and supportive classrooms. Our staff are dedicated to igniting curiosity, recognising unique talents, and providing opportunities for every child to learn, explore, and achieve personal success.
We value the individuality of every learner. Our programs are thoughtfully designed to honour each child’s distinct strengths and interests, fostering confidence and empowering students to reach their full potential.
I am a proud Wiradjuri woman who has lived on the Central Coast all my life. My own educational journey began at Tuggerawong Primary School and continued at Wyong High School. In 1997, I graduated with honours from Newcastle’s Ourimbah campus with a Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Special Education), receiving the Dean's Merit Award.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been committed to Aboriginal Education—running literacy and numeracy programs at Kanwal Public School and working at the Aboriginal Homework Centre at Gorokan Public School. My permanent teaching role at Tuggerah Public School began in 2004, where I advocated for Aboriginal Education to be a shared responsibility. As an active member of the AECG, I continue to work to ensure Aboriginal students are supported both academically and culturally.
My leadership journey includes Assistant Principal and Deputy Principal roles at Tuggerah Public School, followed by my appointment as Principal of Biraban Public School in 2018. My experience includes early literacy and numeracy programs, intervention strategies such as MiniLit, MacqLit, Focus on Reading, Reading Tutor Program, phonics, Seven Steps to Writing Success, Pirozzo, Literacy and Numeracy Progressions, and Best Start Assessment.
Family is very important to me—I have two children, Zahlee and Jonte, as well as three sisters and four brothers. I am also blessed with two grandchildren, and one of my greatest joys is sharing high-quality texts and stories with them. We enjoy camping, travelling together, and making cherished memories as a family.
I warmly invite you to explore our school, visit Biraban Public, and experience our vibrant learning community. Together, we can ensure every child feels seen, supported, and given every opportunity to shine.
Allison Pattison, Principal of Biraban Public School
Our school leaders
Our school leaders at Biraban Public School are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment for every student. They work collaboratively with staff, families, and the community to ensure each child reaches their full potential and has every opportunity to thrive.
Tamaryn Ryan (Curry) - Assistant Principal, Relieving Principal Thurs/ Fri & OC Wolombai
Every day I feel lucky to work alongside our wonderful students, families and staff at Biraban, where I’ve been part of the community for the past three years. I am proud to serve as Assistant Principal and, on Thursdays and Fridays, relieving Principal, while also teaching in the Opportunity Class.
I have 17 years’ experience teaching and leading in primary schools across Newcastle and the Hunter. I am passionate about creating safe, fun and challenging learning environments for students and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all children, as well as supporting and empowering teachers in their work.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a journalist and editor, so it will come as no surprise that I love words – reading, writing, talking and storytelling! I hope to foster that same love of reading, learning and curiosity about the world in my students.
When I am not at school, I enjoy reading, cooking, going to the beach and spending time with my husband, my two sons, and our gorgeous doggo Phantom.
Jacqui Watsford - Assistant Principal (Inclusive Education) & Yimaliko.
My name is Jacqui Watsford and I have been proudly teaching for over 25 years. In that time, I have taught a variety of settings including mainstream classes from kinder to year 6, in support teacher roles, as an early intervention teacher both for not for profit organisations and with the Department of Education. For the past 8 years I have been fortunate to teach students in support classes and lead special education staff in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley. I have been fortunate in gaining a role at Biraban Public School to co-teach Yimaliko with Mr Sparkes, and to guide the special education stage as the Assistant Principal for Special Education.
Wellbeing and emotional regulation, neuro-diverse learners and students that learn best a little bit out of the box is my passion. I truly believe that for students to learn they need to be able to regulate and build relationships before they can reason and become engaged in their learning. Assisting students to develop their own toolbox of strategies to assist them be in a state where they are ready to learn underpins my education beliefs. It impacts how I set up my classroom, the style in which I deliver and guide learning content and how I encourage students to have high expectations of themselves.
Behind the scenes I have lived in the Lake Macquarie area for 28 years, with my very supportive family – my husband and our 4 children, who have all grown up understanding that it is important to have a passionate teacher to help individual students reach their best potential. I love how they all will ask me around the dinner table how my day was, and that I can genuinely say that I am so lucky to be part of the Biraban Public School team.
Melissa Anderson - 2/3 Minamba & Relieving AP (K-2)
My name is Melissa Anderson. I spent my childhood telling everyone that I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up so it was no surprise when I graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Teaching (Primary). I spent 5 years teaching in London and travelling around Europe every chance I could before making the choice to return to Australia in 2020.
I am excited to be working at such a positive and inclusive school like Biraban PS. At the weekend, you will find me taking a relaxing stroll with my dog, Molly, or curled up with a good book, a habit that I plan on passing to all of my students.

I enjoy working alongside teachers to support high-quality classroom practice and to help students grow into confident, capable and curious learners.
Creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences is something I truly enjoy. I believe that when students feel supported, challenged and excited about learning, positive classrooms and strong relationships naturally follow.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time by Lake Macquarie. On the weekends you will often find me sailing with family and friends, walking my dog, or relaxing with a good book.

Ellissa Knox-Leonard - Currently on leave
I feel incredibly lucky to be part of the Biraban Public School community, a place that has always meant a lot to me. I grew up in Toronto, attended Biraban Public School, and later graduated from Toronto High School in 2012, so being back here teaching is really special. Before teaching, I worked as a chef at Merewether Surfhouse and then travelled through America for five months, where I worked at a summer camp. That is where I really found my love for working with young people and knew teaching was the path I wanted to take.
I have been teaching since 2019 and genuinely love what I do. I am known for having a great sense of humour and being a bit of a big kid at heart, which helps me build strong, genuine connections with my students. I became a teacher because I wanted every child to feel safe, supported and proud of who they are.
My classroom is full of laughter, movement and encouragement, where it is okay to make mistakes and celebrate the small wins. I am passionate about sport and fitness and try to bring that into everyday learning because sitting still has never really been my strong point.
Teaching in the support unit is something I care deeply about. I see my students as having their own unique superpowers and I pride myself on being their biggest advocate. I want every student to know they are more than a label and that their differences are something to be proud of. I work hard to create a space where students feel valued and understood.
At the end of the day, what matters most to me is that every child feels like they belong and leaves believing in themselves. Respect, having a go and kindness are things I value every day, and if we can have a few laughs along the way, then I know we are doing something right.
Outside of school, I love camping, going to the gym, bike riding, fishing and being outdoors as much as possible. My family means everything to me and so does my dog Harlow, who is very much the centre of our world. She definitely reflects her owner, so you can probably imagine the level of chaos happening in our house most days
Rheannan Wells - Currently on leave
I have been teaching for 14 years and have been fortunate to gain a wide range of experiences throughout my career. A significant part of my teaching journey was spent in the beautiful and unique community of Broken Hill, where I had many incredible professional and personal experiences working with students and families.
After my time in the outback, it has been wonderful to return to the coast. I enjoy making the most of everything our local area has to offer, especially spending time on the lake fishing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding. I also love heading to the beach, camping, and travelling whenever I get the chance.
I enjoy supporting students as they learn, grow and develop confidence in themselves.
